Leadership in Crisis:

The Real Reasons Companies Underperform... And How I Fix It

It’s time to face the hard truth.  The real reasons companies like yours underperform.  Contrary to popular belief, human behavior hasn’t drastically changed across generations.  The root cause for today’s disgruntled workers and associated lows in employee engagement, productivity, and customer experience, and the motive behind the growing departures of top talent is ineffective leadership.

The signs are everywhere.  Employees have lost faith in their organizations. Here’s why:

  • Uninspiring leadership — Employees want to work for bosses that inspire them.  Only 36% say they do.
  • Lack of recognition — 70% of departing employees cite feeling unappreciated as one of the main causes for leaving their company
  • Limited Advancement — Only 21% of employees see opportunities for career growth

  • Stress Overload — 60% of employees feel stressed at work every day. 75% say that their immediate supervisor is the most stressful part of their job

  • Job Disconnect — 50% of employees don’t see how their daily work connects to the company’s strategic initiatives

Before we start pointing fingers at the entire management team, consider the following:

  • Only 10% of Senior Executives feel they received the training and development they needed to succeed

  • 1 in 4 leaders receive no training at all; the figure jumps to 6 in 10 for first-time managers

  • 35% of internally promoted Executives and 47% of externally hired candidates fail within 18 months

  • 68% of Managers feel overwhelmed; 60% feel unprepared and fail within 24 months

CEOs and company Presidents agree—more needs to be done to support their leaders and managers. According to a Gartner Report, only 28% feel their organizations are effective at developing future leaders.

Leaders are Developed, Not Born.

Just as seeds require nourishment to grow into fruitful trees, bosses need nurturing to grow into exceptional leaders. Hoping they figure it out on their own is a crap shoot that wastes precious time.  What you want is for them to hit the ground running.

There’s no substitute for dedicated one-on-one mentoring time with senior leaders.  Helping managers elevate their skills and succeed in new, higher-responsibility roles is an investment that will pay dividends in the long run.

Additional learning resources like workshops, executive education classes, memberships in professional associations, and expert literature are also valuable for leadership development.

How to Fast-Track Your Mid-level & First-Time Managers, Supervisors, and Rising Stars into Extraordinary Leaders

As new leaders embark on their roles, they must navigate looming deadlines, pressing budget decisions, new, high-priority assignments, and an all-encompassing mantra of “doing more with less” in order to succeed as a team and an organization. Gaining the necessary skills and competencies to keep up with the demands of the job can feel like an agonizingly slow process.

Accelerating the learning process can lead to a smoother transition, better team collaboration, enhanced outcomes and fewer errors.  Why not rev up that engine for improved results?

  • Accepting the high failure rates of senior executives and the associated 150% in annual salary and recruitment costs to replace them
